Terrain

The tenure is in excess of 33,000 acres and this winter the area you will be skiing and snowboarding is on a mountain known locally as K3. You will ski and snowboard the entire mountain and the varied terrain provides an excellent mix of runs. Many of the runs are treed with a nice pitch, but there is also wide open alpine areas where you can enjoy long cruising runs. As well, you can experience great skiing in the South Park burn and when stability is good you will have some exceptional steep tree skiing on slopes up to 50 degrees! You will also be skiing and snowboarding in the new 4 Mile summit area where you can enjoy steep tree runs of over 2000 vertical feet.

The runs average 1500 vertical feet and range from 1200 to 3000 vertical feet. Most of the runs are high up on the mountain, ending at around the 5000 foot elevation so there is generally good snow conditions all winter. The highest elevation is over 7400 feet and the lowest point is around 4000 feet. Also, more than half of the runs are North and East aspect and this helps ensure good snow in all weather conditions.

K3 North is a new and completely separate area.  Access is from 13 kilometer on the North Fork road. From here the snowcat will take you up into some great terrain including an area that Mustang Powder, the neighbour to the north, has been skiing for the past 4 winters under an agreement with K3.

Snowcats

For the ski program the team has 3 new Pisten Bully 600s outfitted with passenger cabs that comfortably accommodate 12 skiers and 2 guides. With 400 horsepower these powerful snowcats quickly get you to the top of the mountain. For backup they have another PistenBully, a PB300 complete with its own cab, not as powerful but it still gets the job done and ensures that in the unlikely event of a breakdown there won't be any wasted days. They also have 2 PB200s for full-time road building and road maintenance.

Safety

There are inherent risks and rewards when skiing and snowboarding in the mountains. Our guides and operating policies are committed to ensuring your safety and to reduce risks. However, you are required to acknowledge these risks by signing a waiver of liability prior to heading out into the mountains. A copy of the liability waiver is included in the registration section.

Over the many this cat skiing operation has been running, they never had a serious accident or mishap. The area to ski and board generally enjoys a good, stable snowpack. There also are many low angle nicely treed runs, where the risk of an avalanche is greatly reduced. And, at those times when the avalanche hazard is high the guide stay off the steeper slopes and enjoy the more mellow terrain until the snowpack has stabilized.

All guests are required to wear an avalanche transceiver and to carry a small pack that contains a shovel, probe and radio.  On the first day everyone is instructed in how to use the equipment and a search and rescue scenario is practiced.  The operator supply all of this equipment at no extra charge.

Guides are fully certified members of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. They are member of Helicat Canada and conform fully to their high operating standards.

Snow & Other Activities

Snowmobiling
Sicamous is known for excellent snowmobiling, with four different trail systems within 29km/18mi of town.

In fact, the area has received many top honours at SnoRiders Magazine's "SnoRiders West Riders' Choice Awards," including "Favourite Area for Family Snowmobiling," "Favourite Groomed Trail-Riding," and "Favourite Overall Snowmobiling Area" in British Columbia.

Ride with the entire family on easy groomed trails, or challenge deep powder bowls and serious climbs. Snowfall in the Monashee Mountains makes for reliable sledding on good powder from November to May, with the season extending even longer at high elevations. Some trails are in remote wilderness areas and pose a definite avalanche risk.

Owlhead and Mara Mountain
With the trailhead about 1km/0.6mi off the Trans-Canada Highway, just east of Sicamous' village centre, Owlhead/Mara Mountain is popular snowmobiling location, offering sledding options for all skill levels along with some great views.

Ride easily along 24km/15mi of groomed trails to the chalet, or serious climbers can tackle Video Hill and Super Bowl. High elevation, over 2,000m/6,560ft ensures good conditions right through to late spring.

Quest Mountain
Outstanding views of the Eagle Valley, Shuswap and Mara Lakes reward sledders in the Quest Mountain Area. Also located very close to Sicamous' village centre, the trailhead is just north of the Trans-Canada Highway. Quest Mountain encompasses 35sq km/13.5sq mi of terrain above an elevation of 2,000m/6,560ft, with groomed trails, deep powder and challenging hill climbs. The chalet is located about 26km/16mi from the trailhead. Do not attempt to snowmobile the unmarked route to North Quest without consulting a local rider. Exercise caution in danger areas.

Blue Lake
The Blue Lake area offers wide-open sub-alpine and alpine terrain at an elevation of 2,000m/6,560ft, rated for beginner-to-expert snowmobilers. Warm up in the chalet along a 23km/14mi groomed trail from the parking area. Take appropriate precautions in danger zones and check snow conditions before heading down to Blue Lake. Access to Blue Lake is 17km/10.6mi east of Sicamous off the Trans-Canada Highway.

Eagle Pass
Only experienced riders should tackle Eagle Pass and it's best to ride with a local who knows the area. A trail is groomed for about 26km/16mi from the access road almost to the alpine. Beyond that it's on-your-own sledding in the wilderness with wonderful mountain peak views. Elevation is well over 2,000m/6,560ft and there is no chalet, so be prepared for any contingency in this remote and rugged area.

We offer 2 and 3-day packages, Monday/Tuesday or Wednesday/Thursday and Friday to Sunday. Of course, packages may be linked for longer stays. During the winter we also offer day skiing that can be booked up to 3 weeks in advance.

Guests skiing Friday to Sunday will check in to the Best Western Inn on Thursday afternoon/evening and check out Monday morning. The same applies to those skiing during the week but with 2 days skiing and corresponding 3 nights accommodation.  The Best Western Sicamous Inn and the Best Western Revelstoke Inn both have a 24 hour desk so no problem if you are arriving late. Please contact us if you wish to stay somewhere else.

The daily routine is to leave in the morning from the Best Western Inn at  8:00 AM. You will first have a quick meeting to review and sign the waivers. Guests staying in Revelstoke are welcome to sign the waivers in advance at our office downtown. You will then head out in the Toyota Sequoia 4x4 trucks to the snowcat departure point, so please be ready to go with all your gear. You can put your ski boots on ahead of time or at the snowcat. There is plenty of stowage space in the cat so feel free to bring along extra clothes or gear.
